Information for Foreigners travelling to the Republic of Korea

For all foreigners who wish to travel to Korea short or long term, please read the below information regarding entry and COVID regulations.

1. Mandatory requirement: Negative PCR test declaration
Anyone travelling to the Republic of Korea must carry their own negative PCR test declaration in order to board an aircraft from 00:00 on 8 January 2021. The airlines that fly to Republic of Korea have been instructed by the Korean authorities to make sure that all foreign passengers are in possession of their own negative PCR test result before boarding. The PCR test must be conducted no more than 48 hours prior to the passenger’s scheduled departure date. Passengers without a negative PCR test result will not be permitted to board the aircraft. Please have the printed hard copy ready.

*Quarantine Exemption Certificate holders for Attending Funeral of Family, or Public/State Matter trip, are exempt from presenting a negative PCR test. (From 2021. Nov. 18)

2. Mandatory for entry: K-ETA or Valid Visa
From April 2022 , nationals of visa waiver countries or designated visa-free countries must obtain ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before entering The Republic of Korea. Please visit this link for more information.

For entry to Korea, all foreigners must have a K-ETA or a valid visa to enter Korea. The K-ETA process will take up to 72 hours and the result will be sent to your email address directly. Please have the printed hard copy ready.
Irish nationals are eligible to enter and stay in Korea for up to 90 days with a K-ETA for tourist purpose.

※You do not need a K-ETA if you have a valid visa to enter Korea.
3. (Recommended) Q-code system for Before entry, and After-entry PCR test.
From 8th June, there will no longer be a quarantine requirements for people entering Korea. This include people who are not vaccinated.Everyone entering Korea are still required to have their PCR test conducted 48 hours before departure and present a Negative Certificate when boarding and entering Korea. Without a negative certificate or one that does not meet the required standard, will not be allowed to board the plane nor enter Korea.
Using the Q-code system is recommended for all people entering Korea to upload their PCR test negative certificate, passport information and answering health condition questionnaire. You will no longer be required to upload your vaccination certificates.
From 14th July, users can register their After-entry PCR test (within 1 day of entry) results on the Q-Code website. Please read below.
Mandatory quarantine will still be in place for those who get a positive PCR test result after entry to Korea. Short term foreign visitors must do their quarantine in a Government facility, and expenses must be paid by yourself. Korean and Long term residents are to do their quarantine in their home.
4. Two Kinds of COVID Tests in Korea
[Short Term Foreigners]
Requirements: 1 PCR test within 1 day of entry OR 1 RAT test on the 6-7th day. PCR test will be conducted in the airport (Incheon, Kimhae, Jeju) upon arrival or facility informed by COVID officer. You are to follow the instructions of the COVID officer during the testing and waiting for the result. * A Self RAT test on the 6-7th day may be required. All instructions on COVID test upon entry must be followed.

[Korean and Long Term Foreign Residents]
PCR test will be conducted in the Public Health Facility of your home area within 3 days of entry. (Within 1 day of entry from 25th July)  A Self RAT test on the 6-7th day may be required. All instructions on COVID test upon entry must be followed.

*What happens if you get a positive PCR test after entry to Korea?
A: The COVID officer will assess to check if the positive result came from a past recovery, or a new infection. If it is judged that it is from an old infection and you are fully recovered, you will be considered 'negative.' If the assessment shows you are newly infected, you will be subject to quarantine. (Short term foreigners: Facility / Long term foreigner or Korea: Home quarantine)
